Operational Technology: The paradigm shift in technological thinking in the maritime industry
IT and OT have had fairly separate roles in the maritime industry. However, with the emergence of digitalisation and integration of complex physical machinery and network sensors with software, the two worlds are now colliding.
One of the main reasons these operational systems and appliances are being brought online is to deliver ‘smart analytics’ - using data generated from the machines to modify and optimise the manufacturing process.
In recent years OT systems have expanded into digital connectivity, as opposed to the historically closed OT systems that relied more heavily on physical security to ensure integrity. This now creates greater interdependence and overlap between the IT and OT worlds, generating a slew of new security concerns.
