In March 2010 Mark tasked by the group CTO division to lead a Orange-France Telecom corporate programme to define and build a private cloud computing service for use initially by the Orange group affiliates to transform their IT towards the cloud, and secondly to support Orange Business Services (the enterprise division of Orange) cloud growth ambitions by providing critical mass, volume and expertise.
The approach was to mutualise and leverage the groups significant IT Infrastructure assets and operations, (a scale of €1 billion per annum) and build a new Cloud Services capability, which could be recharged to internal IT departments, Orange labs and service platforms, globally and also be the foundation of the next generation of offers to external enterprise customers.
Leading a global project team with contributions from all group business entities and geographies a blueprint was delivered and authorised in H2 2010. This blueprint defined the following:
-catalogue of services that would be offered
-the commercial model and pricing
-technology standards
-the operating model and number of cloud “factories” (3)
-high level business case for transformation.
-Security requirements
-People skills and profiles
The blueprint principles were put into practice as a BETA service during 2011/2012 with several uses case and trials from a variety of customers across the group. The offer has been refined based on the feedback from the beta and an enterprise grade service was launched internally in Q3 2012.
