Using cloud computing offers significant business benefits – both operational efficiencies and cost savings. However, organisations are proving slow to adopt it, says Roger Bearpark, Assistant Head of ICT, Hillingdon Borough Council and Richard Blanford, Managing Director, Fordway Solutions.
Based on industry surveys and analysis carried out by IT integrator Fordway, the key issues preventing organisations adopting cloud computing today involve the management of risk. The majority are negated if the organisation implements private cloud for critical services and reserves public cloud for less critical services – effectively creating a hybrid cloud.
At Cloud Expo Europe 2012 Roger Bearpark and Richard Blanford look at how the London Borough of Hillingdon has used virtualisation to implement a private (hybrid) cloud solution. The benefits have included significant cost and energy savings. 80% less power consumption and a 20% reduction in its carbon footprint – a lesson to many.
In the last issue, the London borough of Hillingdon is the first UK local council to begin using Google Apps for Business. This is a presentation not to be missed. For more details click here.
